Our History in Siouxland

Established in 1871

150 years ago, in November of 1871, Sioux City Foundry and Machine Works was established on the corner of Main and Seventh Streets in Sioux City, Iowa. Sioux City Foundry Co. began producing engines, gristmills, saw mills and building columns, as well as providing general repair work of machinery and iron.

In 1890, Sioux City Foundry moved to its present location at 801 Division Street in Sioux City, IA and became known as New Foundry and Manufacturing Co. At that time, the foundry produced boiler parts, as well as one of the earliest steam-driven tractors. All-Cast Norfolk coal furnaces were also produced and eventually progressed to producing gas-heated furnaces.

Turn of the Century

The early to mid 1900s were full of change. In 1920, the company went into receivership and was then taken over by Sioux City Foundry and Boiler Co. Jake Kalin, a partner in the new company, headed the division devoted to manufacturing the Norfolk furnace.

In 1947, the company split into two separate entities with Milton L. Galinsky, his father A.J. Galinsky and Harold B. Goldstein heading the foundry operation, and Kalin established Kalin's Heating & Air Conditioning. It was at that time the foundry stopped furnace production and entered the jobbing business. An electric furnace enabled the company to produce alloy and ductile iron in 1954, and a new steel fabricating shop was constructed in 1958.

The 1960s to Present Day

In 1963, the company modernized all of its foundry equipment, and the foundry division began operating out of a multi-million dollar metal casting plant in South Sioux City, Nebraska, in 1969. In 1974, the first mainframe computer system was installed for use in operations and our Steel Warehouse installed our elaborate stacking system in 1979. Then, in 1995, Sioux City Foundry began to epoxy-coat reinforcing steel in a new 35,000 sq. ft. coating facility. Sioux City Foundry continues to pioneer the metals industry. We continue to offer our customers new products and processes to meet the demands of the ever-changing industrial market.

In the last five years, Sioux City Foundry has continued to grow by continuously upgrading computer networks and shop capabilities. A new Sector Plasma/Hi-Def Oxy Fuel table was added to our Steel Service Center's capabilities to allow for quicker output. Our metal casting department was upgraded in 2009 with the addition of new furnaces that have improved efficiency with faster melt time. Our contract manufacturing department added the Machining Center in the fall of 2010, allowing customers the convenience of in-house milling and threading of their ordered parts. Also in 2010, Sioux City Foundry began producing unique stainless steel wine racks. This new wine storage system, Wine On the Wall, offers connoisseurs of all price points a streamlined way to showcase their wine.
